NYC Roller Derby

We at BSC abhor violence.

But we can make an exception if it's on roller skates ... or in a Mad Maxian dystopian future where Kangaroos rule the Earth.

That's why we rest easy knowing that Gotham Girls Roller Derby is about to return, greasing our wheels for the start of the five-team league's 2012 season.

Their bouts (aka matches) feature two teams of five players. Each team has one jammer who scores points by lapping the opposing team's players. She's the one with the star on her helmet — but she gets so banged up that it might as well be a bullseye.

The remaining skaters block the opposing teams' jammer from scoring while clearing a path for their own jammer. The result is ten women circling a flat oval track while pushing, shoving and occasionally sucker-punching each other.

Sounds like a heavenly Saturday night, right?
