Car-Crushing Crazies

It's monster truck mayhem at the Meadowland's Monster Jam

Except for MMA, table gambling and burying gangsters in swamps, New Jersey offers very few experiences that aren't already available in New York City. On Feb. 4 and 5, add to that short list Monster Jam at the Meadowlands, two days of high-octane, ear-splitting, car-crushing mayhem.

With its roots in the humble American tractor pull, the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam is now an internationally known -- and intercontinentally awesome -- entertainment juggernaut that thumbs its nose at the myth of peak oil. The ticket includes Quad-FMX, Motocross and BMX races, but the main event is the Monster Jam Freestyle, where trucks have 90 seconds to perform a mechanical ballet in an obstacle course of crushed cars.

Sure, New York City's stocked with some of the world's best entertainers, but there's nothing quite like watching a 9,900-pound vehicle named Grave Digger catch 20 feet of air. No, this ain't the Metropolitan Opera -- this is New Jersey. Consider Monster Jam the Garden State's contribution to high art.

Tickets are $30-$70; Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam, Feb. 4 (7:30 p.m.) & Feb. 5 (2 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.); Meadowlands Sports Complex, Map
